What Causes Scabies in Babies

In the earliest days of our baby’s life, we simply to do whatever we can to keep our baby as comfortable as possible to be able to develop freely limiting any issues, as much as we can, along the way. Baby Scratching Head

This is not an easy task since our babies, being new to this world, are very fragile and potentially open to all kinds of diseases that can make their first days, weeks and months a bit uncomfortable. One of the most common things our babies can endure is scabies.

Let’s take a closer look at scabies, how does my baby get it and possible treatments.

How does my baby get it?

Scabies is spread through direct physical contact with others that are infected or being in the same space or area as the infected person. Scabies spread and reproduce extremely fast but they need our bodies to survive. On its own scabies doesn`t last long at all approximately one day or a day and a half at most, but they spread fast and quickly so whenever there is an infected person this is a high-risk area for everyone. In addition, a babies skin is still extremely gentle and can be more prone to these kinds of infestations. For these reasons, locations with several babies or toddlers such as nursing homes or day care centers are traditionally a very high risk for a scabies infestation.

Areas of the body that are most commonly targeted for infestation (and if you see your baby being uncomfortable and uneasy check these areas first) are armpits, behind the knees, inside the elbows, between buttocks, between the fingers etc. Basically anyplace that is a little warmer and protected.

How to treat it?

Luckily, since it is a commonly spread thing there are several remedies that are available to help your baby overcome Scabies Mites.

Initially, it is highly recommended that you take your child to a doctor as soon as you have any doubts that they might have scabies. By early diagnosis and early treatment you will be helping all other parents by excluding your child from any group activities until they are scabies free.

Once the infestation is confirmed by your child’s physician there are a number of lotions and creams they may be prescribed, as well as natural remedies. Most commonly, your child will be prescribed a treatment with permethrin cream, crotamiton cream or sulfur ointment. If the infection becomes more severe antibiotics may be prescribed to help fight the infestation.

In combination with this, you can take some measures to make sure your home is Scabies Mite free.

Mites cannot survive long outside of our bodies so after the treatment starts, be sure to wash all the clothes and bedding of the infected person and vacuum all the surfaces they may have been in contact with.

A detailed general cleaning of the entire house is recommended.

After treatment and thorough house cleaning your baby will be mite free and good to go on new adventures with you!

What Kills Scabies Fast

What kills Scabies instantly? Unfortunately, nothing can overcome the Scabies Mite instantly.

What Kills Scabies FastThere is no single answer however there are definite actions you can take that will speed up your recovery and get you scabies free quickly.  What kills scabies fast is usually a combination of treatments both natural and home remedies together with a broad spectrum antibiotic,  a doctor prescribed solution or lotion.

Let’s review some of the best treatments out there, that will make you scabies free in as short a time as possible.

Rosemary oil combined with Clove oil:

If you are looking for a natural application, a combination of Rosemary oil and Clove oil is an effective solution. These oils battle scabies on their own however it is when they are combined where the process has stronger antimicrobial properties.  Rosemary oil on its own will decrease pain and it will prevent the possibility of secondary infection while Clove oil has strong anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Oral Ivermectin:

Ivermectin is prescribed by your doctor. In small, medically prescribed, quantities it is perfectly safe for human ingestion while it is extremely deadly for mites. As it name suggests you take it my mouth, it enters your bloodstream where the mites eat it and it will incapacitate them and eventually kill them. Best course of action would be to combine it with a natural soother for the itching and rashes on your skin.

Permethrin Cream:

Permethrin cream is the go to prescription of most doctors when battling scabies. It is applied topically on the skin where it will get absorbed and kill the mite. It is very important to do at least two treatments since it won`t dispose of the eggs in the first application. It will handle all adult mites on the first application and then it should be applied again in a few days (after the eggs have hatched). Permethrin cream is not able to penetrate the eggs as they are too well protected and resilient in that form, that is why a follow up application is required.

All medications on and treatments must be done in conjunction with detailed cleaning and vacuuming of your house in order to prevent the possibility of re-infestation and to reduce the likelihood of the infestation of others in the household.

Generally for an infestation to occur direct exposure is required so it is best to reduce physical contact keeping all contact to a minimum until the patient is all clear.

Home Remedies to Get Rid of Scabies Fast, Naturally and Permanently

Two Top Home Remedies.

Home Remedies to get rid of Scabies FastTea Tree Oil for Scabies Treatment

Tea tree oil has natural disinfectant and antiseptic properties that can be used on many skin problems. One of the compounds, Terpinen-4, in tea tree oil is the active component that kills Scabies mites.

Apply Tea Tree Oil directly to the affected area. Do this twice a day to the affected area. This needs to be done for up to 2 weeks for best results. Once exposed to tea tree oil Scabies mites will die.

Note: if you have sensitive skin then you may need to use a 30% strength solution. I recommend starting off with a lower strength to see how the skin reacts as well as checking for positive results.

Tea Tree Oil is only effective for mites that are on the surface, the mites burrow into the skin and this remedy will not be as effective. It is not effective on Scabies eggs as these are not on the surface, however used in conjunction with Apple Cider Vinegar this proves to be very successful. I would also recommend that it be used in conjunction with other natural scabies remedies

It will also give great relief for the scabies itch and rash which in itself is an additional positive reason for its use.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Scabies Treatment

Vinegar which has a high PH causes scabies mites to die when used on the skin.

Make a solution of equal parts of vinegar and water. DO NOT use vinegar without diluting the solution to 50%. Apply the solution using a cotton ball or similar to areas of the skin that are affected, leaving the solution on the skin for 15 minutes.

Use this treatment three times daily to naturally and permanently get rid of the Scabies mites.

These are natural treatments that have proved very effective.

Can I Use Bleach To Treat Scabies

Yes, this is a natural method to treat scabies as bleach kills scabies mites. The best method as described below is to soak in a bath

A couple of points to be aware of

  • Dilute the bleach, DO NOT use bleach straight from the bottle.
  • DO NOT ingest (swallow) bleach

Add 750ML (about 3 cups) of bleach to a tub of bath water, the water should be as hot as you can stand. How long to stay in the bath, the longer you stay in the bath the better the result. If you want to do this in one treatment then you need to stay in the bath tub for up to one hour. Move around in the tub to ensure that you have covered all areas.

Air dry yourself when you get out of the bath, don’t use a towel to dry yourself.

Apply moisturizer after you are completely dry.

Follow the other methods for ensuring that your clothes are clean and scabies mite free so that you minimize reinfesting yourself.

If you find that a single hour long bath doesn’t get rid of the mites, then you will need to carry out the procedure again the following day.

I would strongly suggest having the bath at night, the last thing before going to bed, also ensuring that your bedding (sheets etc) and mattress have been thoroughly cleaned and are mite free

Scabies Symptoms and Signs

It can take some time for symptoms to appear this can be from two to six weeks after exposure which usually includes severe and continuous itching. This is more pronounced at night.

What does scabies look like?
• Scabies lesions can present in different forms. The skin may show signs of small insect-type bites, or the lesions may look like pimples or blisters, especially around the wrist, elbow, knee, underarm area, groin, or finger webbing. The skin may also be red or have sores which will become more pronounced due to scratching of the area.
• A “burrow”, a short S-shaped track that indicates the scabies mite’s movement under the skin, may also be visible. This is more evident in the webs area of fingers and toes. Burrows can be very small and are often overlooked. So, scabies also should be considered whenever there is intense itching even without any obvious signs of symptoms as described here.
• Scabies frequently occur in cracks or fissures of the body such as between the fingers and toes, the buttocks, the elbows, the waist area, the genital area, and under the breasts in women. As a general rule the face, neck, palms, soles, and lips are usually not affected, however this is not the case in infants or very young children.
• Risk factors such as immune suppression or old age may predispose patients to more extensive disease. In crusted, also known as Norwegian scabies, the body is covered with a thick, dry, and scaly rash. The rash of crusted scabies may or may not itch, however it may contain millions of mites. Crusted scabies is the most contagious form of scabies and the hardest to treat.
• Many other skin rashes may look like scabies including allergic drug reactions, dermatitis and viral rashes such as shingles.

if you suspect you have scabies please see a doctor, because treatment of the condition requires medication. Also, other conditions may cause rashes that itch, and it is important to have the correct diagnosis when considering treatment options.
